The longevity of Delta’s executive leadership is a point of pride for the institution. In the 64 years of its existence, Delta College has only had five presidents: Samuel D. Marble, Donald J. Carlyon, Dr. Peter D. Boyse, Dr. Jean Goodnow and Dr. Michael H. Gavin. Each have left lasting impressions on the institution, successfully positioning Delta as a model for community colleges across the nation.
Delta’s founding president, Samuel D. Marble, was quoted saying, “Our goal is to obtain educational equality, and when this level is reached, to surpass it.” Words he lived by, successfully building a foundation of excellence that permeates the walls of the college to this day.
During Donald J. Carlyon’s 28 years as Delta’s president, he focused the college’s attention on innovation and built a best-in-class workforce for its students. In 1966, Carlyon initiated the Summer Project sending dozens of faculty members to 24 two-year colleges across the nation. They returned with over 100 recommendations for Delta. His radical actions led Delta to becoming a founding member of the League for Innovation.
Dr. Peter D. Boyse also left a lasting mark from his 12 years as president by way of $70 million in renovations which included a new library, pool, Health and Wellness Center, science wing and the state-of-the-art Technical Trades and Manufacturing Complex.
Delta’s color has always been green, but when Dr. Jean Goodnow became President in 2005, being green took on new meaning. She signed Delta into the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, leading the way for colleges to create ecologically sustainable environments on their campuses and for their surrounding communities.
